Babe,
Talk to your friend's husband; he will most likely know the exact local requirements. When I took mine in Michigan about 10 years ago, we had a written test (theer was a study book you could pick up ahead of time), a "slow" portion (figure 8s and a slalom course), a "fast stop"/skid test ("accelerate to x speed, then stop within these 2 cones without dropping the bike"), and a swerve test (accelerate to x speed toward the center of 3 cones arrayed in a line perpendicular to your approach, then on a signal from the tester swerve right or left around the outside cone, and end up back facing in the original direction). Basically, it was written for rules of the road, and then performance for avoidance and control. Not hard, but required practice. Just get someone to help you with countersteering and turns, and the practice (that's the fun part). The biggest thing (in my experience) that they were looking for was "slow, look, lean, roll" (slow before the turn, off the break in the turn; look through to the exit of the turn, not in front of the bike; lean in by countersteering; roll on the accelerator through the turn) on turns, and overall confidence on the bike. Nothing hard, just need a little practice time.
Good Luck!!!!
